Dorset is a county in England's South West, located on the English Channel coast. The county borders Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire. The Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is one of the most famous Dorset attractions that include the seaside holiday towns of Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth and Lyme Regis. The county also encompasses the towns of Dorchester, Blandford, Wimborne and Shaftesbury and some of the most beautiful and quintessentially English countryside. All over Dorset there are events and attractions to please the whole family. When it comes to accommodation in the area, there is plenty of choice, so if you are planning a visit to the county you are sure to find a Dorset hotel to suit you.

The largest holiday resort in the county is of course Bournemouth. There are seven miles of beaches, lovely parks and gardens as well as all the typical British seaside attractions including nightclubs and bars. Bournemouth's beaches are family friendly, many do not allow smoking and four miles are completely dog free. There are specific areas designated for water sports, making bathing safer. There is plenty here for those who like fishing, cycling and horse riding too. Bournemouth is host to a variety of annual festivals and entertainments, including heritage fairs, fireworks displays and the summer Kids Family Fun Festival.

Weymouth, with its safe sandy beach, is another popular seaside resort in the area. The beach in Weymouth is award winning and offers old fashioned seaside fun including Punch and Judy shows and pedaloes. Weymouth beach also has a sand sculpture attraction, started by Fred Darrington in the 1920s and continued today by his grandson. The beach also hosts the International Beach Kite Festival, Beach Motocross and Volleyball Championships each year. Nearer to Bournemouth, the town of Poole is set on a busy quay and a picturesque natural harbour and has some world-class beaches. Poole harbour is the largest harbour in Europe. Poole's Old Town is rich with the town's history, with smugglers passages and elegant merchants' houses. You can follows the 'Cockle Trail' and learn about the town's rich heritage.

Named the 'Pearl of Dorset', Lyme Regis is another of Dorset's historic seaside resorts. This small fishing port, on the Devon border is known for The Cobb, an imposing harbour wall built from Portland stone. Lyme Regis is featured in novels by Jane Austen and also inspired the book 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'. You can take a wander through the steep narrow streets and admire the Georgian architecture of the town and visit the working watermill. You can also learn about Lyme Regis' geological importance in various museums and attractions dedicated to the fossils found along the Jurassic Coast. The records show that fossil hunting in this area dates back at least one hundred and ninety-five years.

Away from the sea you can visit Blandford, a fine example of a Georgian market town and home to the annual Great Dorset Steam Fair. The surrounding countryside, with its rolling hills and wooded valleys is lovely for leisurely walks. Wimborne is another market town, with original buildings from the 15th, 16th and 17th Century. Overlooking Blackmore Vale, Shaftesbury is perhaps the most scenic market town in the county, immortalised by the author Thomas Hardy. Dorchester is the county town and also steeped in history and culture, with six thousand years of history and packed full of great places to shop and eat.

When choosing your Dorset hotel you will find a diverse range of properties all over the county. Many of the coastal towns have seafront hotels with fantastic views. Many hotels offer swimming pools, fitness centres, saunas and spas, even golf courses. Plenty have their own restaurants and bars, as well as room service. Should you wish to host an event at a Dorset hotel, you will find plenty with great banqueting rooms and services and many hotels offer beautiful bridal suites. For business travellers there are conference facilities, meeting rooms, Wi-Fi, faxing and photocopying services. Whatever your reason for visiting Dorset, there will be a hotel which suits your taste, needs and budget.

With its seaside resorts, market towns, little villages, beautiful countryside and literary heritage, Dorset is a county with something to suit everyone.
